A group of scientists from the Autonomous University in Spain discovered that the fertilization performance of pig sperms exposed to red LED light for 30 minutes increased.
In the article published as a result of the research; While a decrease is observed in the quality of sperms that are generally kept at 37°C for 90 minutes over time, it was concluded that this natural degradation event is prevented in sperm cells exposed to red LED light under the same conditions.
The team led by Marc Yeste working in the field of Cell Biology, for the experimental setup; used commercially prepared pig sperm and computer-controlled LED light, whose wavelength can vary between 620-630 nm, and observed the effect of LED light by experimenting with different durations.
As a result of the research, it was revealed that while the exposure time of 5-10 minutes did not cause any change in sperm, the effectiveness of sperm exposed to red light with 10-minute cycles increased. It has been observed that the most effective method is in the red light set, which is exposed for 10 minutes together with 10 minutes of dark intervals. Scientists who provided this activity by using red laser light in their previous work, argued that working with LED provides both a less costly and more stable activation.
It is thought that the results of the research can be a new alternative in treatments applied to prevent infertility in humans.
