If LED Bulbs Are More Economical, Why Doesn’t Electricity Bill Drop?

You have replaced all old-style bulbs in your home with LED bulbs. Because LEDs seem to be more efficient and more economical (up to 85 percent) light sources. Well, despite replacing all the bulbs with LEDs, your electricity bill hasn’t decreased? Let’s look at the reason for this together.

We used to use incandescent or compact fluorescent light bulbs in our homes for a long time. Today, a more efficient lighting technology called LED technology has emerged. In other words, LEDs can produce more light by consuming less energy. For example, you can save 85% of energy by replacing an incandescent lamp with 60W power consumption with an LED lamp that consumes 8W power.

You have replaced 20 incandescent lamps in your home with an LED lamp. LED lamps also provide 85% energy savings compared to the old situation. Naturally, you want to see a significant reduction in your electricity bill. When the invoice came at the end of the month, you encountered the same amount or saw a slight decrease. What could be the reason for this?

Light sources are not the only ones that consume electricity in your home. Other devices such as washing machines, dishwashers, refrigerators, ovens, water heaters, air conditioners and computers also have electricity consumption. Such devices consume great power even if they work for a short time. For example, a dishwasher has a power consumption of about 1,800W, a washing machine consumes about 800W, even a small kettle needs 2,000W of power.

You have changed 20 lamps in your home. But remember, you weren’t keeping these 20 lamps on at the same time anyway. You may keep the lights in the hall on all the time, but this will only be limited to evening hours. You need light for a very short time in areas such as corridors, bedrooms, and sinks. This causes your energy consumption due to lighting to be low.

Lighting has a small share in the electricity consumption of a house. This share corresponds to a value in the range of approximately 15-20 percent (this rate is higher in workplaces). That is, if you pay an electricity bill of 100 TL, only 15-20 TL of it is due to lighting. Therefore, the highest savings you can achieve by only changing the light bulbs at home will remain within this limit.

Another issue is that the heat produced by incandescent or halogen bulbs heats the house a little in winter, reducing heating costs. However, this effect is reversed in the summer months, the heated light bulbs increase the temperature of the environment and cause the air conditioner to be operated more.

The savings provided by LEDs are not limited to electricity consumption only. Quality LED lamps have a longer service life than incandescent and compact fluorescent lamps. This helps you to achieve additional savings by reducing the cost of lamp replacement.
